Plot summary
Sixteen-year-old Rebecca Cantor records her private thoughts in a diary at the Brangwyn School, an exclusive girls' boarding school. Her father, a poet, took his own life two years earlier, and her mother moved her to Brangwyn to leave that memory behind. Rebecca's roommate and closest friend, Lucy Blake, helps her settle in. The next year a dark-haired student named Ernessa Bloch arrives, and Lucy's attention goes to the newcomer. Rebecca feels uneasy about Ernessa and about the distance opening between herself and Lucy, who has found a new confidante. When Rebecca tries to raise the matter, Lucy dismisses her as jealous.
