Plot summary
Henri "Papillon" Charrière works as a safecracker in the Parisian underworld. He is framed for murder. His lover, Nenette, provides an alibi, but he is convicted and sent to the Devil's Island penal colony in French Guiana. On the ship to South America he meets Louis Dega, a counterfeiter from Marseille. Other prisoners believe Dega is carrying hidden money, and they target him. Papillon steps in and saves his life, and the guards punish him for the fight. In return, Dega agrees to pay for an escape attempt.
