Plot summary
Carter and Frankie are siblings growing up in New Orleans with their mother, Whitney, who works long hours and does not allow pets in the house. On their walk home from school, the two find a small stray dog and quickly grow attached to him. They name him Benji and feed and care for him in secret. When Whitney learns how much the dog means to them, she tells them the family cannot keep him. The children say goodbye to Benji.
