Plot summary
Erik Coyle is nineteen and earns his money as a hustler. He is out of prison early because he gave information about Bennie, the dealer he had worked for. Back outside, he sets about putting his former life together: Heather Keene, his girlfriend, Dolores, the woman who used to act as his pimp, and Tommy Holbart, his best john. Erik wants those people around him, and he wants a family, even one that holds together for a single day. He tricks Tommy into covering a place to live, a used car and a job, and Heather moves in with him there. Then Bennie is brought in for questioning.
