Sonia Dresdel
Biography
Sonia Dresdel was an English actress whose stage and screen career ran from the 1940s into the 1970s. Born in Hornsea, she moved to Aberdeen as a child and trained at RADA and the Royal Academy of Music. She began on radio in the 1920s and made her professional debut with a repertory company in Northampton, then spent five years with a troupe in Harrogate. Her West End debut came in 1942, playing the lead in Ibsen's Hedda Gabler at the Westminster Theatre, and for a decade she was counted among England's foremost stage actresses. She toured with the Entertainments National Service Association during World War II. Her best remembered film role was Mrs Baines in The Fallen Idol (1948), nominated for Academy Awards for directing and screenplay. Later she turned to theater management and directing, and appeared on television, including as the Witch in Lizzie Dripping.
