Plot summary
In July 1942, French police in Paris arrest Jewish families and hold them at the Vélodrome d'Hiver. Sarah Starzynski, ten years old, is taken with her parents. Before the officers entered the apartment, she hid her younger brother in a closet, told him to stay until she came back and carried the key away with her. In 2009, Julia Jarmond, an American journalist in Paris, is assigned an article about that roundup; in the archives she finds Sarah's file.
