Plot summary
Allied forces are closing on Paris in August 1944, and Adolf Hitler orders General Dietrich von Choltitz to destroy the city's landmarks. Engineering teams are sent to mine the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Place de la Concorde, Notre Dame Cathedral and Les Invalides, and to flood the Seine. Lieutenant Hegger leads them, advised by a captured Parisian engineer, Jacques Lanvin. The Swedish consul Raoul Nordling reaches the general's office at the Hotel Meurice by a secret staircase built for a courtesan who once lived there. He tells Choltitz that the demolition would cost innocent lives and asks him to call it off. The general is unmoved and says he intends to do his duty. Parisians begin to revolt against the German patrols, and fighting fills the streets.
