Plot summary
Fanny is a Jewish girl in wartime France, one of a group of Jewish children sheltered for three years by the Œuvre de secours aux enfants in Vichy France, while her family and teachers stay behind. The German occupation of Vichy France pushes the group toward the Italian occupied zone, and when that zone falls after Italy's armistice with the Allies, the children have to try for neutral Switzerland. Their guide vanishes on the way, and Fanny, with Erika, Georgette, Rachel, Ethel, Maurice, Marie, Jacques and Helga beside her, has to lead the children over the mountains herself. The story comes from Fanny Ben-Ami's memoir Le journal de Fanny.
