Plot summary
Kidane lives in a nomad's tent beyond Timbuktu with his wife Satima, their daughter Toya and their adopted son Issan, and the family keeps cattle and goats. Issan herds the animals by the river, where a fisherman named Amadou sets his nets. In the city, armed jihadists have taken control, ordering women to cover themselves and banning music, television and football. Their patrols record propaganda videos and hand out sentences from improvised courts. A water seller carries water by motorcycle to the tent-dwelling families. When the family's pregnant cow becomes entangled in Amadou's nets and he spears it, Issan runs home in tears. Kidane goes to confront the fisherman, though Satima urges him not to.

- Abderrahmane Sissako's fifth film, Timbuktu, was inspired by the true story of a young, unmarried couple who were stoned to death by Islamists in Aguelhok, a rural region in eastern Mali.
- Sissako first wanted to make a film about slavery in Mauritania, but the country's president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, found the storyline unacceptable; Sissako then made a film about jihadists instead, with Mauritanian government support.
- Sissako meant to shoot Timbuktu in the city itself, but moved the production to Mauritania after a suicide bomber attacked a checkpoint near Timbuktu's airport.
- At the 11th Africa Movie Academy Awards, Timbuktu took the most prizes of any film, five, among them Best Film and Best Director for Sissako, out of 11 nominations.
