Plot summary
George, a Czech-born mining engineer of 76, is working to join North America and Asia by rail. With his fast-talking protégé Scott, he follows the planned line across Alaska to the Bering Strait and on toward Russia. The InterContinental Railway would run through a hundred-kilometer tunnel beneath the strait and cost $100 billion. The two men say it would give the continents ground-based infrastructure, take pressure off crowded Pacific ports, steady global supply chains and reduce tensions between the superpowers. Their task is persuasion: governments, corporations and indigenous tribes all have to approve it. Space programs have shown that the United States and Russia can cooperate; George and Scott want to prove the same is possible at ground level.
