Plot summary
Charlotte Lockton is a wealthy, upper-class English immigrant who has made her home in New Zealand in the 1860s, the years of the gold rush. Her baby son is kidnapped, and she must find him. To search for the boy she gives up all the luxuries she once had at home. Her search takes her into the unruly, wild world of the gold rush, a place she does not know. There she meets hustlers, sex workers, Maori warriors, and Chinese miners, and she finds unlikely friendship among them. The search for the boy keeps her on the edge of danger.
