Plot summary
In 1997, eleven-year-old Jesse goes out hunting with his grandfather Gene. In the forest the boy comes upon a mysterious staircase, and neither he nor Gene returns home. The people nearby have no account of what became of the two of them. Two decades pass. A group of friends sets out on a week-long hike along an ambitious trail through that same stretch of wilderness. Each step carries them farther from civilization and deeper into the mountain terrain. A week away with friends becomes a struggle to survive, and on the trail they come upon the same set of stairs.
