Plot summary
Peter Miller has a new wife, Beth, and a newborn son, Theo. He also has a seventeen-year-old son, Nicholas, from his first marriage to Kate, and he hardly knows the boy. Kate appears without warning and tells Peter that Nicholas is depressed and has quit school. Peter lets Nicholas move in with him, Beth and the baby. Peter wants to be a good father, unlike his own, Anthony, who was often absent and treated him harshly. Peter believes he has left his childhood behind. Nicholas comes to live in the house, and Peter tries to build a bond with him.
