Joanna David

Joanna David is an English actress whose career has been centered largely on television. Born in Lancaster and trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, she took her first major television role as Elinor Dashwood in the BBC's 1971 adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, following it a year later with Sonya in War and Peace. She played Theo Dane in a 1975 version of Ballet Shoes, then the heroine of Rebecca opposite Jeremy Brett, and appeared in Anna Karenina and Lady Killers. Later she moved into more mature parts, among them Mrs. Gardiner in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice, and she has worked in series including Miss Marple, Foyle's War, Inspector Morse and Midsomer Murders. Her films include The Smashing Bird I Used to Know (1969) and Comrades, and she voiced the title character in a 2022 animated short based on Leonora Carrington's The Debutante. She also holds a vice-presidential position with the Theatrical Guild.
