Christopher Gable

Biography

Christopher Gable, an English ballet dancer, choreographer and actor, was born in London and trained at the Royal Ballet School. He joined Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet in 1957, became a soloist in 1959 and a principal in 1961. His classical roles included Romeo in Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet, Mercury in Orpheus in the Underworld and Colas in La fille mal gardee. After leaving the Royal Ballet in 1967, he turned to acting and appeared in several Ken Russell projects, among them Women in Love, The Music Lovers and The Boy Friend (1971). His other films included The Slipper and the Rose (1976) and The Lair of the White Worm (1988), while on television he took roles in The Caves of Androzani (1984) and A Woman of Substance (1985). In 1982 he founded the Central School of Ballet and later became artistic director of Northern Ballet Theatre, and in 1996 he received a CBE.

With Ann Stannard, Gable set up the Central School of Ballet in 1982. He took the role of Artistic Director at Northern Ballet Theatre five years afterward.
