Plot summary
New York, 1880: the Dalton brothers escape a court hearing and rob banks across the city while Lucky Luke hunts for them. The brothers hide the cash in an empty wagon in Central Park, and Averell gives them away to the police. When they return for the loot, they find a wagon train of European settlers bound for California. They have eighty days to claim the land they bought from Crook, or the money is lost. Joe persuades Lucky Luke to guide the caravan, hoping to stay near the hidden cash. The safe route is too slow, so Luke takes the settlers through the desert and past the Crazy Wolves' territory, while Crook and Bartleby follow with traps of their own.
