Plot summary
An on-the-job accident has left Boston police detective Frank Shaw with worsening hearing loss. Sixteen months later he is nursing a beer in his local bar and weighing retirement when his former partner, Detective Doug Slater, asks a favor. The interpreter who was to help question a witness is unavailable, so Frank accompanies Slater to the derelict apartment building of Ava Fremont, a deaf photographer who saw two drug dealers killed. She lip reads; his sign language is rough. Ava also recorded the murder, and the officers take her phone as evidence. Frank leaves thinking he can still work as a policeman, then realizes the phone that adjusts his hearing aids' volume is still in her apartment.
