Plot summary
In an English manor house in the early 1900s, Ella Venable is killed at night by her husband Walter, the butler Andrew and the maid Clara. Her tabby cat Tabitha witnesses the killing, and the three of them resolve to destroy the animal. Walter had made Ella sign a will leaving him everything, but an earlier will, which gives him nothing, is still hidden in the attic, and he wants it found and destroyed. Inspector Rowles and the newspaperman Michael Latimer come to the manor to look into Ella's disappearance. Walter asks Ella's favorite niece, Beth Venable, to stay there, and Beth, who knew Michael when she lived with her aunt, cannot understand why everyone is so afraid of a gentle house cat.
