Vanda Godsell

Biography

Vanda Godsell was an English actress whose career lasted 46 years. A native of Bognor Regis, she first acted with the Bristol Repertoire in 1937, at age 14. Her stage debut came in 1942 as Nancy in Gaslight, and her television debut in 1949 as Mirabelle in My Mother Said. In 1950 she voiced Lulu Smith for a BBC Home Service production of Sunday Night Theatre, and she entered films in 1953 as Angela Neilson in Flannelfoot. On television she played Hilda Wardle in Coronation Street, in 14 episodes from 1961, and her best-known part was Katie Heenan on the BBC One soap opera The Newcomers, which she played from 1966 to 1969. Hal Erickson of AllMovie described her specialty as blowsy domestics, busybody landladies and disheveled housewives. She retired in 1983 after playing Woman in the debut episode of Reilly, Ace of Spies.
