Plot summary
Maja, a Romanian refugee, is building a new life in America after World War II with her husband, Lewis, and their son, Patrick. Nightmares of the war still wake her. When she spots a man on the street, she is certain he is a German soldier she encountered fifteen years earlier, and she follows him to the house he shares with his wife and two children. The next day she lures him out, knocks him unconscious and puts him in her car trunk. She tells Lewis what she remembers of the war and what she has done. Together they tie the man to a chair in their basement, where he gives his name as Thomas Steinmann and says he is Swiss. Maja questions him while neighbors and police search the streets.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director and co-writer Yuval Adler found the premise a little stale and began talking to Rapace hoping to freshen up the story; to his surprise she revealed that she is possibly of Romani descent on her father's side, which inspired him to change Maja from a Jewish woman to a Romani woman.
- The wartime incident that Maja lives through is not invented: Adler based it on an actual war crime that happened in Eastern Romania.
