Plot summary
Derrick is studying for the bar exam and struggling to make ends meet. His best friend and roommate E.J. works at awards shows, filling the empty seats that guests leave behind, and he brings Derrick along. At the Video Beat awards gala Derrick is seated beside the R&B singer Jhnelle, who takes him for Alonzo Grant, the lawyer who represents stars, and asks him out. Over dinner Derrick admits he is not Alonzo and has nothing to pay the bill with. She laughs, tells him she was going to pay anyway, and they leave with a second date arranged. Derrick intends to cancel because his funds are short, but E.J. promises to cover it as long as E.J. comes along, and Jhnelle's friend Sandie comes too.
