Plot summary

Long ago in Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together until the Druun, mindless spirits that petrify living beings, swept the land. Sisu, the last dragon, focused her magic into a gem and defeated the Druun, reviving the people but not the dragons. The gem's possession split Kumandra into five chiefdoms: Fang, Heart, Spine, Talon, and Tail. Five hundred years later, Chief Benja of Heart keeps the gem and trains his daughter Raya to guard it. Benja believes the tribes can reunite and invites their leaders to a feast. There Raya befriends Namaari, a princess of Fang, who gives her a dragon pendant. When the gem is broken during a struggle, the Druun return and Raya flees Heart. Six years later, she and her steed Tuk Tuk search across Kumandra for Sisu, hoping the dragon can help restore the land.

Kelly Marie Tran had auditioned for Raya and been rejected; when she replaced Cassie Steele in January 2020, she assumed Disney was hiring her only to fill the lead role. Director Don Hall said the recast came because Raya was first conceived as a "stoic loner" before the team gave her "levity" and "swagger".
Disney hired each voice actor separately and recorded their lines individually, keeping their identities secret from one another until some discovered the others' involvement by accident. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the cast completed the project from their homes.
Cinemark and Harkins in the US and Cineplex in Canada initially refused to screen the film after declining Disney's rental terms; it then failed to match the opening-weekend grosses of The Croods: A New Age and Tom & Jerry.
To show Raya's distrust, the animators shot her with a wide-angle lens, deep focus and a narrow color palette, while the trusting Sisu got a telephoto lens, shallow focus and a broad palette, switching styles shot by shot along Raya's story arc.
Filipino singer KZ Tandingan was hired to perform "Gabay" (Guide), Disney's first-ever Filipino-language song, a version of "Lead the Way" released on the soundtrack of the film's Filipino dub.
