Plot summary

Matthew is a young man with schizophrenia who loses his apartment when a slumlord tears down his tenement. With nowhere to go, he moves into the Fort Washington Armory, a shelter for men, where the other residents make life hard for him, and Little Leroy, one of the tougher men there, threatens him. Matthew asks Jerry, a homeless military veteran who lives at the shelter, to teach him how to get through the days. Jerry was once cheated out of a small business and keeps his fury at the world in check; he takes the younger man under his wing.
