Plot summary
Fifteen years after Paradise Misplaced won him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, Keith Michaels is divorced, depressed and short of money. Pitching has brought him nothing, so he takes a screenwriting post at Binghamton University in Upstate New York. He is scornful of the job and of teaching itself, and he chooses most of his students for their appearance. After remarks about Jane Austen, he angers Professor Mary Weldon. He also takes up with Karen Gabney, an undergraduate. In Binghamton he gets to know Holly Carpenter, a single mother of two in a steady but unloving relationship. She believes that effort can develop talent and solve problems, while he doubts that anything can revive his career or his bond with his estranged son Alex.
