Max Phipps

Max Phipps was an Australian actor, director, and singer whose career covered theater, film, and television from the 1960s through the 1990s. Born in Dubbo, he grew up in Parkes and trained at Sydney's Ensemble Theatre at age 21. His stage credits included Buffalo Skinner, Long Day's Journey into Night, and The Removalists, and he took the role of Dr Frank-N-Furter in the Melbourne run of The Rocky Horror Show from 1975 to 1977. On screen he played The Toadie in Mad Max 2 (1981) and Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in the miniseries The Dismissal (1983). He also portrayed Sir Frank Packer in True Believers (1988). His work in Stir (1980) earned an AFI award nomination. Further films included Thirst (1979), Nightmares (1980), Savage Islands (1983), Sky Pirates (1986), The Return of Captain Invincible (1983), and The Cars That Ate Paris (1974). He died in 2000.
