Shug Fisher
Biography
Shug Fisher was an American character actor, singer, and musician whose entertainment career lasted roughly five decades. Born in Grady County, Oklahoma, he took up fiddle and guitar as a boy and was playing square dances with his father by age 16. After radio work in California and later with Hugh Cross in West Virginia and Ohio, he joined the Sons of the Pioneers in 1943 as bassist and comedian, appearing with the group in a string of Roy Rogers movies and writing songs for them; in 1951 the group played Carnegie Hall, the first Western band to do so. Fisher belonged to the circle of actors John Ford hired regularly and worked in many Western B movies and features from 1943 onward. He voiced Uncle Pecos in the Tom and Jerry short Pecos Pest. On television he was a regular on Ozark Jubilee, played pilot Charlie Kern on Ripcord, and had recurring roles on Gunsmoke and The Beverly Hillbillies.

First role
In 1931, Tom Murray, who had just left the Beverly Hill Billies, gave Fisher a place in his new Los Angeles group, the Hollywood Hillbillies. Fisher learned the bass fiddle there and said he was among the first to play it in a country band.
A first
In 1951, Fisher and his group performed at Carnegie Hall. This made them the first Western band ever to play at that venue.
Behind the camera
Fisher wrote several songs for the Pioneers, among them "Out on The Open Range" and "Forgive and Forget". He and Merle Travis co-wrote "Cincinnati Lou" in 1946.
About the name
Fisher adopted the hillbilly name Aaron Judd when he joined members of the Beverly Hill Billies in San Francisco, part of a radio station's ruse that the musicians were authentic hillbillies it had discovered.
A change of course
In 1924, Fisher saw a comedian performing with a traveling medicine show. That experience led him to decide to pursue a career in entertainment.
