Plot summary
While a good king lies ill, Pete, the captain of the guard, lets his men rob the kingdom's people and claims royal authority for it. Mickey, Goofy and Pluto live as beggars, and one day a carriage of stolen food rolls past; Pluto chases a sausage hanging from it into the castle, and Mickey follows to fetch his dog. A guard takes Mickey for the prince and lets him in. The prince hears Pete roughing up Mickey and Pluto and has them brought to him. Face to face, the two find they are identical, and the prince, bored with palace life, talks Mickey into exchanging clothes and roles. The prince tells him that if anything goes wrong, his royal ring will show who the true prince is.

- The Prince and the Pauper was Disney's final use of the traditional ink-and-paint and camera process for a theatrical product, before the CAPS digital process made the old techniques and equipment obsolete. It was also the last Mickey Mouse short to use the APT process.
- The Prince and the Pauper was the first animated short Disney produced to accompany the original release of a Disney animated feature, opening with The Rescuers Down Under in 1990.
- Some objects in the short, such as the carriage, were created on computers, then printed on paper and photocopied onto animation cels; the animation was given a watercolor look based on Disney's late-1930s style, influenced by Fred Moore.
