Plot summary
While on a hostage rescue mission in a Mexican forest, Army Ranger sniper Quinn McKenna watches an alien ship crash. He takes armor and a gauntlet from the wreck, stuns the hunter that emerges, and mails the gear to his ex-wife's house as proof of extraterrestrial life. Government agent Will Traeger seizes the creature for study and has Quinn held with a group of ex-soldiers. Biologist Casey Bracket is brought in to examine the captive Predator, which carries human DNA. The mailed gear reaches Quinn's son Rory, who has autism and a gift for languages; when he switches it on, a larger Predator hunting the first one locks onto its signal and sets a course for Earth.

- Director Shane Black hired a longtime friend of his, a registered felony sex offender, for a minor un-auditioned role in which his character repeatedly tries to flirt with Olivia Munn's character. Days before picture lock Munn became aware of his history and insisted to Fox executives that the scene be removed.
- Black said the original ending was deemed too complicated, so it was reshot to be more streamlined and to take place at night instead of during the day, on the reasoning that darkness would make the Predator seem scarier.
- Black wanted the home media release to include both versions of the reshot finale, nicknamed Predator AM and Predator PM, but the studio declined, not wanting to pay to complete the daylight version's digital effects.
- Arnold Schwarzenegger talked with Black about reprising his role as Dutch Schaefer from the first Predator film but declined the cameo because the part was too short, and rapper 50 Cent also discussed being involved before dropping out.
- Edward James Olmos shot a supporting role as General Woodhurst, but every one of his scenes was cut from the finished film because of time constraints.
- The reshoots went far beyond a trim: according to Keegan-Michael Key, approximately three quarters of the script for the film's final act was rewritten.
- By September 2016 Benicio del Toro had signed on to star, but the following month Boyd Holbrook replaced him after del Toro departed over scheduling issues.
