Alice Playten

Biography

Alice Playten was an American actress whose high-pitched, child-like voice shaped a long career on stage and in animation. Born in New York City, she began performing in 1959, at age 11, in Wozzeck at the Metropolitan Opera, and went on to Broadway shows including Gypsy, Oliver!, Hello, Dolly! and Caroline, or Change, plus off-Broadway work such as Lemmings and First Lady Suite. Her stage work brought a 1968 Tony nomination and Theatre World Award for Henry, Sweet Henry and Obie Awards in 1973 and 1994. On screen she appeared in Legend (1985), under heavy makeup and prosthetics as the minion Blix, and in I.Q. (1994). Her voice work included Heavy Metal (1981), My Little Pony: The Movie (1986), Felix the Cat: The Movie (1988) and Doug's 1st Movie (1999), and she was a regular on the children's series The Lost Saucer and That's Cat.
