Plot summary

Charlotte Willmore, a young cellist, left the prestigious Boston music school Bachoff to look after her mother through a terminal illness. After her mother dies, Charlotte contacts Anton, the head of the school, and he invites her to Shanghai, where he intends to choose a new student. There she meets Lizzie Wells, his star pupil and the musician who took her place at Bachoff. The two women spend a night at clubs and end up in Lizzie's hotel room. The next morning, Charlotte gives the hungover Lizzie ibuprofen, which she washes down with alcohol, and the two set out on a trip through rural China.
