Plot summary
At a missile base in Kartaly, Russia, ten Soviet nuclear warheads are loaded onto a train for transport to a dismantling facility. General Aleksandr Kodoroff and a rogue Spetznaz unit kill the soldiers aboard and move nine of the warheads to a second train. Kodoroff puts a timer on the remaining warhead and sends the transport into a passenger train, and the warhead detonates. Dr. Julia Kelly, who leads the NSC Nuclear Smuggling Group, and Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Devoe are handed the search for the stolen warheads.

- Director Mimi Leder had only ever directed made-for-TV movies before this film, and she was herself surprised that Steven Spielberg picked her, rather than an established feature director, to launch DreamWorks Pictures as a theatrical studio.
- Before signing on to The Peacemaker, George Clooney had already committed to star in a planned Green Hornet film for Universal opposite Jason Scott Lee, with Sam Raimi directing, but he dropped that project to take this role instead.
- The Peacemaker introduced the animated DreamWorks Pictures logo, a 25-second CGI sequence scored by John Williams, which the studio's newly formed animation division kept using on its own early releases.
- A scheduled network television airing of The Peacemaker on ABC was pulled on September 14, 2001, because of the September 11 attacks just days earlier.
