Plot summary
Katrin Koerber, an Austrian medical professor's daughter, is lonely and wishes her life were more exciting. Walter Fane, a bacteriologist from Britain, proposes marriage and a move to Hong Kong; she accepts although she does not love him. There his medical work absorbs him. Jack Townsend, an attaché at the British embassy whose own marriage is unhappy, takes her around the city, flirts with her and kisses her. She retreats home, then joins him again to watch local dancers at a Buddhist festival, where he tells her he loves her and she says she does not love Walter.
