Plot summary
Lena is a middle-aged woman who has just learned she has ankylosing spondylitis. The diagnosis means her body is changing in ways she cannot control. She leaves her city home and her ailing father and moves to a remote cottage in Northern Ontario. There she builds a routine for herself indoors and walks the land around the cottage. A frozen lake lies only steps from her front door, and it draws both her fear and her fascination.

- The story's central illness came from Ingmar Bergman Makes a Movie, a 1963 Swedish documentary in which property master Karl-Arne Bergman talks about how his recent ankylosing spondylitis diagnosis is transforming his physical and emotional life.
- An early-March thaw in Hunstville, Ontario caught the filmmakers unprepared during principal photography; their small crew shoveled snow from one location to another to make it look like they had more than they did, before giving up and letting spring happen, which Calvin Thomas said changed the movie in a great way.
- The directors never thought to ask Claudia Dey to play the lead because she had just had a baby and was busy working on a new book; they asked if she knew anyone who might want the part, and she replied, "I would do it."
- The opening of the film and its few flashbacks were shot as pick-ups in Toronto during the edit, because the original screenplay had nothing but the cabin and the directors felt they needed more contrast about where she was coming from and where she was going.
