Plot summary
Most of the men in Nick Lowell's Osaka prison are yakuza, marked by their irezumi tattoos; he is the only inmate who is not Japanese. Nine years after the Pacific War, the Shiromatsu-ikka arranges his early release after he keeps one of its men, Kiyoshi, from being hanged. At the clan's headquarters he is offered work: a negotiation with Anthony Panetti, an American businessman who dislikes the Japanese and has refused to deal with the Shiromatsu-ikka, preferring the rival Seizu-kai. Nick beats Panetti with a typewriter, and Panetti reconsiders. When Seizu-kai men come from Kobe to intimidate the clan at its nightclub, Nick steps in. Kiyoshi gives him an apartment and a suit, and the task of driving his younger sister Miyu home.
