Plot summary
Samuel North comes home from college to his girlfriend, Hanna Thompson, and the two plan a dinner on the banks of a river. Hanna never arrives. A large white van runs Sam into the water, and his soul descends to the Pit, where the worst memories of his life torment him. Other escapees pull him free, and he wakes in a hospital beside them, learning that Hanna did not come home the night before and that he is a suspect in her disappearance. Three bounty hunters dispatched from the Netherworld come for the escapees. Sam gets away with Mally and Oz, who have been caught and returned before and bear the Mark of the Damned, by which the Reapers track them. Mally and Oz intend to flee to Mexico, but Sam is set on finding Hanna.
