Plot summary

Emma Stein is pregnant and single, and her mother, Kerri, advises her to end the pregnancy. The child's father, Ethan Carpenter, objects and promises to help her, but Emma decides to go ahead with the procedure. Ethan and his family then bring a lawsuit claiming the unborn child's right to life, and Kerri contacts a friend at the Associated Press. The case becomes a media spectacle, and the court must decide whether the child Emma carries is a person, and if so, whether it holds the unalienable rights listed in the Declaration of Independence. Those rights appear in the document in a deliberate order: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
