Plot summary
The eleven members of the Bower family play together as a band, each on a different instrument, and set their hopes on singing for President Grover Cleveland at the Democratic National Convention of 1888. Joe Carder, a journalist courting the eldest daughter, Alice, talks them into leaving Missouri for the Dakota Territory, singing of its marvels. In their new town, Grandpa Bower keeps speaking up for Cleveland, while the residents are Republicans who want the territory admitted as two states. Grandpa's politics bring the family trouble: Alice has just taken a teaching post, and the courtship of Joe and Alice suffers.

- Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn first met while making this film, when Russell, six years Hawn's junior, was still a teenager; 17 years later they met again at a rehearsal for Swing Shift (1984), began dating, and have been a couple ever since.
- Walt Disney felt Laura Bower Van Nuys's story was too flat and called in the Sherman Brothers; they wrote the title song, Disney then added more numbers to turn it into a musical, and the Shermans wrote eleven songs, with Robert Sherman reportedly working under protest because he found the subject too mundane.
- Walt Disney brought Walter Brennan back from The Gnome-Mobile (1967), the film starring Mary Poppins kids Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber, to play Grandpa Bower, because Brennan reminded Disney of his own father.
