Plot summary
In Vietnam, Bill joins a Special Air Service reconnaissance section for a year-long tour, alongside Harry, the section corporal, and Bung, Rogers, Dawson and Scott. Away from the battlefield the men spend most of their time on cards, beer, cigarettes, jokes and messing about with American troops, while Harry argues constantly with the squadron cook about the food. Mud, rain, boredom and tinea fill their first weeks. Then a mortar barrage hits the camp, causing casualties, and the section's first operation takes them into dense jungle. Long, exhausting patrols are broken by short, savage encounters with the enemy, mines and booby traps.

- The Australian Defence Force gave the film full co-operation, and the Iroquois 'Huey' helicopters that appear in it came from 9 Squadron, RAAF, a unit whose aircraft had all served in combat during the Vietnam War.
- Scenes were filmed at the Australian Army's Jungle Warfare Training Centre at Canungra, Queensland, the same place where all Australian soldiers, draftees included, went through four weeks of specialised training before being deployed to Vietnam.
