Plot summary
The Saint Cartha's monastery in Romania is the site of a death that the Vatican cannot ignore. Father Burke, a priest whose past weighs on him, is enlisted to look into it, and he brings Sister Irene, a nun still in her novitiate, with him. They travel to the cloistered abbey and meet Frenchie, the villager who hauls supplies and who found the body. He leads them to the corpse, and Burke pries a key from its fingers. The Abbess tells them the nuns keep silence through the night, so no one may enter until morning. Frenchie leaves, and something in the woods comes after him. That night Burke is lured into a grave, and Irene pulls him out.
