Plot summary
The chief of medicine at a Manhattan teaching hospital, Dr. Herbert Bock has left his wife, his children do not talk to him, and the hospital he works at is falling apart. Two doctors and a nurse have died there, deaths attributed to failures to provide accurate treatment. Administrators face a protest over their plan to annex a decrepit neighboring apartment building for a drug rehabilitation center. Bock admits to impotence and has thoughts of suicide, and he is drawn to Barbara Drummond, a patient's daughter who came from Mexico with her father for treatment.
