Plot summary
In a Yorkshire depot, five railway maintenance men learn that British Rail has been privatized and that they now answer to a company called East Midlands Infrastructure. On one maintenance job, a crew member is sent away because his depot belongs to a rival firm, and the others cannot finish the work. A video presents their new managing director, Mr Hemmings, who speaks of an age of change in the rail industry. He says the culture will change too and that a job for life is finished, though there are new openings for anyone willing to show initiative. The company is renamed Gilchrist Engineering, and Gerry argues with his boss over procedures brought in without consultation.
