Plot summary
Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr. works for the LAPD's Police Squad, and his methods draw the attention of Chief Davis, who reassigns him. During a bank robbery he breaks up, a device is taken from a safe deposit box. Frank looks into the car crash that killed Simon Davenport, a software engineer, and calls it suicide; Simon's sister Beth, who writes crime novels, disagrees. A matchbook from the crash site carries the logo of a nightclub belonging to Richard Cane, Simon's employer at Edentech, a tech company whose expo Frank attends. Cane gives Police Squad a self-driving car and invites Frank to the club.

- Alan Spencer wrote a sizable role for Leslie Nielsen, who would pass the torch to a new generation of incompetent police, but Paramount asked him to reduce it to a cameo for budgetary reasons and later removed the character altogether. Spencer left the project, and Nielsen died in November 2010.
- David Zucker said a Paramount head of production objected in a 2019 meeting to a mild joke in his Naked Gun script about a police officer adjusting her Kevlar vest or having a breast reduction, and that even a "stupid, mild joke" was too much for the studio.
- Pamela Anderson, who joined the cast in April 2024, was originally offered the role of Tanya Peters in Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult, but it went to Anna Nicole Smith.
- Paramount's planned Naked Gun reboot was to star Ed Helms as a character who introduces himself as "Frank Drebin, no relation", so the film could add a new protagonist without contradicting the earlier ones; Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant co-wrote the script.
