Plot summary
Holland March works as a private eye in Los Angeles in 1977, taking odd cases and drinking too much. Mrs. Glenn hires him to find her niece, the porn actress Misty Mountains, saying she has seen her since her death. The search brings March to Amelia Kuttner, who wants him gone and pays the enforcer Jackson Healy to scare him away. Healy visits March at home and breaks his arm, then takes a Yoo-hoo from Holly, March's teenage daughter. Two thugs later come to Healy's home asking about Amelia; he sends them off, decides she may be in danger, and persuades a reluctant March to help him look for her.

- Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe both accepted their roles in The Nice Guys within a period of three days, which director Shane Black credited as the reason the long-stalled film could finally move forward. Black summed it up as "After thirteen years it just popped into place in three days".
- Shane Black's earlier version of The Nice Guys failed to attract any buyers, so he reworked it into a 64-page script meant to serve as a television pilot. CBS was interested, but objections from its Standards and Practices department meant it never progressed.
- The film's Atlanta shoot stood in for 1970s Los Angeles; production designer Richard Bridgland used the Atlanta Hilton, which had not changed since being built in 1976, and Dallas Austin's house, whose design was based on what architect John Lautner did in Southern California.
- For The Nice Guys, the character Misty Mountains' glamor photography was shot by Arny Freytag, the photographer behind most Playboy centerfolds of the 1970s, recruited by production designer Richard Bridgland.
- Warner Bros. opened The Nice Guys with its 1972-84 production logo, featuring the "Big W" that Saul Bass designed for Warner Communications.
