Plot summary

Helicopters round up thousands of wild mustangs to thin the herds, and a few hundred of the horses are sent to prisons where inmates train them for sale. Roman Coleman arrives at a Nevada prison after twelve years behind bars for an assault that left his domestic partner permanently brain-damaged. A psychologist, finding him poor with people, assigns him to outdoor maintenance. His pregnant teenage daughter Martha visits to have him sign papers, and he tells her not to return. During maintenance he is seen interacting with a horse the staff consider dangerous, and he is placed in the mustang program run by Myles. Each inmate gets one horse and twelve weeks to train it, and Henry, the top inmate trainer, begins showing him how.
