Plot summary
John Klein works the national affairs desk at the Washington Post. Two years ago his wife Mary swerved to avoid a flying black shape only she could see, and died soon after of a brain tumor; while hospitalized she drew the same mothlike figure with red eyes over and over. Driving overnight toward Richmond, John's car fails and he walks to a house whose owner, Gordon Smallwood, holds him at gunpoint, insisting John has knocked at his door at 2:30 a.m. three nights running. Sheriff Connie Mills calms the situation. At a motel John learns he is in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, far off his route with no memory of the hours before. Connie tells him residents have been seeing a large winged creature, and some have drawn it.

SPOILER
The real Silver Bridge collapse killed 46 people, not the 36 shown in the film, and the movie's end-credits claim that the cause was never explained is false: the failure of an eye-bar in a suspension chain was identified in 1971, before John Keel's book, and long before the film.- Mark Pellington, who took the film over from original director Carl Franklin, rejected numerous drafts of Richard Hatem's screenplay for treating John Keel's book too literally, steering the film instead toward a psychological drama about UFO witnesses.
- The film's Silver Bridge collapse sequence was not shot at the site of the real disaster but on the Kittanning Citizens Bridge in downtown Kittanning, Pennsylvania.
