Plot summary
In 17th-century Paris, Harpagon is a wealthy widower whose love of money rules the house. Ten thousand gold coins lie buried in his garden, and his greed makes life hard for his son Cléante, his daughter Élise and the servants. He arranges marriages for the two of them that cost him nothing: Élise is promised to the elderly Signor Anselme, who agrees to take her without a dowry, and Harpagon intends to marry the young, poor Mariane himself. Élise loves Valère, who has taken work as Harpagon's house steward to be near her, and Cléante loves Mariane. To find the money to marry her, Cléante approaches an intermediary about a loan.
