Plot summary

Henry Wilt is an assistant lecturer at a technical college in Mid Anglia, under-rated at work and dominated by Eva, his psychologically immature wife, and he fantasizes about murdering her. During a night walk, he accidentally breaks up an undercover police operation run by Inspector Flint, who then keeps him under scrutiny. Weeks later, after a party at the home of their wealthy friends Hugh and Sally, Eva goes missing, and the Wilts' abandoned car is found near a construction site where Henry dumps an inflatable doll.
