Griff Rhys Jones
Biography
Griff Rhys Jones is a Welsh comedian, actor, writer and television presenter who came to national attention in the 1980s through the BBC sketch shows Not the Nine O'Clock News and, with Mel Smith, Alas Smith and Jones. Born in Cardiff in 1953 and raised in West Sussex and Essex, he became a trainee producer at BBC Radio Light Entertainment after Cambridge. He was a regular on Not the Nine O'Clock News from its second series. With Smith he appeared in the films Morons from Outer Space (1985) and Wilt (1989), and they co-founded the production company Talkback. He received Laurence Olivier Theatre Awards for Best Comedy Performance in 1984 and 1994, for Charley's Aunt and An Absolute Turkey. He presented It'll Be Alright on the Night from 2008 to 2018 and has fronted documentaries including Three Men in a Boat and Mountain. He also created his own production company, Modern Television.

Rhys Jones and Mel Smith started the production company Talkback in 1981. Its British comedy series included QI, Big Train, Smack the Pony, Da Ali G Show, I'm Alan Partridge and They Think It's All Over.
A change of course
After Cambridge, Rhys Jones became a trainee producer at BBC Radio Light Entertainment. His duties there covered Brain of Britain and the satirical show Week Ending.
