Plot summary
Professor Quigley tells the Medfield College board that the school needs a computer to compete academically, and Dean Higgins turns him down. Listening through a hidden walkie-talkie, Dexter Riley and his classmates decide to ask A.J. Arno, a wealthy local businessman who once employed Dexter, to pay for one. Arno refuses at first, then sends his own machine to the college in place of his usual twenty-thousand-dollar donation. The new computer soon breaks down, and Dexter volunteers to fetch the replacement part and install it during a rainstorm, handling the wires while standing in water. The shock leaves the computer dead and gives Dexter a mind that can finish a ninety-minute exam in five minutes with a perfect score.
