Biography

Martha Vickers was an American model and actress who moved with her family from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Burbank, California as a teenager, took part in student shows, and worked as a model and cover girl before she reached the screen. Her first film part, an uncredited one, came in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), and she spent the early 1940s in minor roles at Universal and then RKO. Her break came when a Warner Bros. photographer chose her from dozens of models for The Big Sleep (1946), in which she played Carmen Sternwood; the studio signed her and she adopted the name Vickers. She followed it with the musical The Time, the Place and the Girl and the comedies Love and Learn and That Way with Women, then worked mostly in television during the 1950s, including a 1954 Ford Theatre episode and a 1959 Perry Mason appearance, with her last performances in 1960.
